Frequently asked questions

Is Homiletics free?

Yes. Homiletics is free on every platform, with no ads and no subscriptions.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the app and start studying. There's nothing to sign up for.

Where are my studies saved?

Your homiletics, lecture notes, recordings and word studies are saved in the app on your device as you type. They aren't uploaded to a Homiletics server, and they don't sync between devices. Deleting the app deletes them, so print or share anything you want to keep first.

Can I use it on more than one device?

Yes. You can install Homiletics on your phone, tablet and computer. Each device keeps its own studies, so it's easiest to study on one and share a PDF when you need it somewhere else.

How does the app know this week’s passage?

Tap All studies on the home screen and choose your study. The app keeps a schedule of weekly passages for several studies, including current BSF studies, and shows the one for this week. You can always study any other passage with Study another passage….

Does it work without internet?

Mostly. Your studies are always available. To read the Bible offline, download one of the free offline Bibles; other translations come from Bible Gateway and need a connection. Transcription works offline once the model has been downloaded. See Reading offline.

Will recording keep going if my screen turns off?

Yes. Recording keeps going with the screen off. On Android you'll see a “Recording lecture” notification while it runs. See Taking lecture notes.

Why does transcription need a download?

Transcription happens on your device, not on a server, so the app needs a speech model the first time (about 140 MB). You can download or delete it anytime under Settings → On-device models. Wi-Fi is a good idea.

Why don’t I see definition suggestions in my word study?

Suggestions come from an English dictionary, so they appear only when you're reading an English Bible. You can always write your own definition.

Windows says it “protected my PC”. Is the download safe?

Homiletics is new to Microsoft SmartScreen, so Windows may warn you about it. If you downloaded it from our download page or the official GitHub releases, choose More info, then Run anyway.

How do I see the welcome walkthrough again?

Open Settings and tap How homiletics works.

Is this an official BSF app?

No. Homiletics is an independent app made to help people write BSF-style homiletics. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Bible Study Fellowship.

What does the app send online?

What you write stays on your device. The app goes online only to:

  • Show Bible text for translations you haven't downloaded, from Bible Gateway and the Homiletics passage service, and to download offline Bibles.
  • Load the weekly study schedule that powers “This week”.
  • Look up a word when you ask for definition suggestions (sent to a free online dictionary) or search for other usages (sent to Bible Gateway).
  • Download on-device models and fonts the first time you need them for transcription, formatting or printing.
  • Report errors. If something breaks, the app sends a short error message and your device's operating system. The app is built to leave what you've written out of these reports.
  • Send feedback, only when you submit the feedback form.

Lecture recordings and transcripts never leave your device. There are no ads or analytics in the app, and this website uses no cookies or trackers. Read the full privacy policy.
